Plight of Migrant workers in Gulf Countries

Salams to All,

I have recently read several articles about the desperate situation of some migrant workers in the Gulf countries (UAE, KSA, etc.). Thousands have lost their jobs because of the covid-19 situation. But the outrageous part is that many have NOT been paid for the last month or two that they did work. And their landlords have evicted them from their apartments because they can't pay the rent. Since they are foreign workers they are not eligible for unemployment benefits in those countries (even though they were working there legally!). These folks are trying to get back to their home countries--frequently Pakistan or India, but with few commercial flights available and no money to pay for a flight, many have become homeless and are living in desperate conditions. I understand that covid-19 has caused a severe world-wide recession, but couldn't these countries have treated the workers a little more humanely? Not even getting paid for work that was already done is amazing to me. Throwing people out of their apartments when nobody can pay rent and forcing people into homelessness is just criminal. Aren't these employers and landlords Muslim?! How can they do this to other people? (And the irony is that many of the South Asian expats are themselves Muslims.)
