We have to understand the meaning of Kafir (disbeliever). The root verb of the participial noun kafir (and of the infinitive noun kufr) is kafara, which means "he [or "it"] covered [a thing]." (Ref: 1. Tāj al-ʿArūs ,2. Misbah of El-Feyoomee, 3. Asas of Ez-Zamakhsheree, 4. Kamoos, 5. Edward Lane.) As a pre-Islamic term it described farmers burying seeds in the ground, covering them with soil while planting (أَعْجَبَ الْكُفَّارَ نَبَاتُهُ) (Surah 57 Al-Hadid (Iron) Ayah 20.

So, kafir means someone who denies a fact that he knows that it is a truth for one reason or other. So, it does not apply to Christian, Hindu, or atheists. These non-Muslims are not kafirs because they honestly believe their concept of God is flawlessly authentic. That is why the Quran states:

“Indeed, those who believed and those who were Jews or Christians or Sabeans,--ANY who believed in God and the Last Day and did righteousness - will have their reward with their Lord, and no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.”( Quran: 2:62. )

Moreover, chapter 22, verse 40 states: "Did not Allah check one set of people by means of another, mosques, monasteries, churches, and synagogues, WHERE THE NAME OF GOD IS COMMEMORATED in abundant measures, would have been pulled down."

SUMMARY: All praying Hindus paying devotion to one God through different Divine manifestations. No Hindu, who knows their religion will say there are multiple God. Based on the verse, "...And there is no blame upon you for that in which you have erred but [only for] what your hearts intended. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful," God is forgiving any unintentional errors.

Let me from a Quranic Point of you to explain why one become a kafir. For example, a Hindu knows the following verses of unity of of God then practice contrary to the teaching of the scripture, then that Hindu becomes the kafir (knows the divine truth but deny it and follows practices contrary to Hindu Scriptures).

I believe that Hinduism is to included in the "People of the Book". Why?

"And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger.." Quran 16:36

So, There must have messengers in India also. Now read quotes from Hindu scripture. Initial part of quotes is Sanskrit that is the original language of Hindu Scriptures.

Thouhid of Hindu scriptures:

"Ekam evadvitiyam"
"He is One only without a second."

[Chandogya Upanishad 6:2:1]1
1[The Principal Upanishad by S. Radhakrishnan page 447 and 448]
[Sacred Books of the East, volume 1 ‘The Upanishads part I’ page 93]
.............................

"Na casya kascij janita na cadhipah."
"Of Him there are neither parents nor lord."

[Svetasvatara Upanishad 6:9]2
[The Principal Upanishad by S. Radhakrishnan page 745]
[Sacred Books of the East, volume 15, ‘The Upanishads part II’ page 263.]

.....................

"Na tasya pratima asti"
"There is no likeness of Him."

[Svetasvatara Upanishad 4:19]3
[The Principal Upanishad by S. Radhakrishnan page 736 & 737]
[Sacred Books of the East, volume 15, ‘The Upanishads part II’ page no 253]

..................

iv."Na samdrse tisthati rupam asya, na caksusa pasyati kas canainam."

"His form is not to be seen; no one sees Him with the eye."

[Svetasvatara Upanishad 4:20]4
4[The Principal Upanishad by S. Radhakrishnan page 737]
[Sacred Books of the East, volume 15, ‘The Upanishads part II’ page no 253]

So, Scriptures of Hindus quoted above clearly states unity of God as in the Quran. A Hindu become Kafir, when he knows the unity of God from their scripture and he denies it and practice the opposite of the teaching. Then only a Hindu becomes kafir
