I have long wondered why I am expected to not just pray ritual prayers but recite them in Arabic, a language I don't understand. Even the Roman Catholics gave up doing their rituals in Latin and switched to the vernacular in 1962 (Second Vatican Council)---they also dropped the requirement that women cover their hair in church as part of the same reform. Nobody would characterize the Vatican as being especially progressive but even they changed. The RC Church was also opposed to translating the Bible into any other language besides Latin. For many years, only Protestants could read the Bible in their own languages.
