Respected brother,

Things are actually simple. Let's avoid extremes.

I might have said that I have seen very few true Muslims.

MY DEFINITION OF A MU’MIN (True Muslim) BASED ON THE QUR'AN:
My definition of a Mu'min (true Muslim) as I understand from the Qur'an: "One who has conviction in the Truth as expounded in the Final Word of God revealed to the exalted Prophet Muhammad. A Mu'min lives the Qur'an i.e. he follows its directives in daily life. Others are at AMN (peace) with him, trusting that he will be truthful, keep his word and will never wrong them."

49:15 The true believers (Mu’mins) are only those who have attained conviction in God and His Messenger, and afterward doubt not, but strive in the way of God with their wealth and their person. Such are true to their word. [2:8, 4:136]

See that Allah has named us Muslim.

2:132 This very legacy Abraham left for his children, and so did Jacob, saying, “O My children! Indeed, God has chosen for you the Way of Life. Therefore, let not death overtake you except that you are Muslimoon”
[Muslims = Submitters to God alone = Guardians of peace. 2:236, 22:78. ‘Deen’ = The Divinely Prescribed System of Life = Al-Islam = The Way of Life. Religion (Mazhab) is a generic term signifying a creed involving certain rites and rituals and seeking individual salvation. Islam being a Collective System of Life is, in fact, a challenge to religion]

2:133 Were you present when death approached Jacob and he asked his children, “Whom will you serve after me?” They answered, “We will serve your God and the God of your forefathers, Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac - the One True God. And for Him we are Muslimoon.”

22:78 Strive for God with strife befitting Him, for He has elected you and placed no hardship in Religion, the Creed of your father Abraham. He has named you Muslimeen in the bygone days and now in this Revelation, that the Messenger may be a witness against you and you may be witnesses against mankind! So, establish the Divine System and set up the Just Economic Order, and hold fast unto God. He is your Patron; how excellent a Patron and how excellent a Helper!
[2:143. Muslimeen = Muslims = Submitters = Those who submit to God alone = Upholders of peace. 2:132, 2:136]

In my humble opinion, Allama Iqbal was the greatest thinker, philosopher, poet and Qur'anist during the last one thousand years. He identified himself as a 'Sunni Hanafi' Muslim only in his last writing (i.e. his statutory will). He made it clear that 'Ahmadis' or Qadianis had been trying to slander him by claiming that the Allama had been a Qaidiani off and on. Hence, the Allama felt it necessary to clearly dissociate himself from them.

I hope, respected brother, that I have addressed your queries reasonably well.

May Allah bless you!
