AlQur'an and Sunnah.

Muslims have been taught by the so called "learned scholars" that Islam consists of on one hand AlQur'an which is the Words of Allah and on the other hand the Sunnah which is the ways and actions of the Prophet Muhammad.
No Muslim will argue against the fact that AlQur'an is the Words of Allah as that is clear from the text of the Arabic language and the challenges within the Divine Book Itself.
However it is very important for a seeker of Truth to examine the other claim that the Sunnah is the ways and actions of Muhammad the messenger of Allah.

Let us begin with the following verses so that we can reach a clear understanding of the Sunnah according to the Divine Book.
The first verse that must be properly analysed and understood is the following :

Muhammad was not aware that he was going to be chosen by Allah as His Messenger.

Surah Ash-Shura, Verse 52:

"And thus have We (Allah) by Our Command, sent inspiration to thee (Muhammad) : thou (Muhammad), knewest not (before) what was Revelation, and what was Faith (iman); but We (Allah) have made the (Qur'an) a Light, wherewith We (Allah) guide such of Our servants as We (Allah) will; and verily thou (Muhammad) dost guide (men) to the Straight Way,-"
(English - Yusuf Ali)

This verse is very clear in itself. No further explanation is necessary.

So on receiving the Divine Message what was his duty? The following verse makes that clear.

Surah Al-Maeda, Verse 67:
يَا أَيُّهَا الرَّسُولُ بَلِّغْ مَا أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكَ مِن رَّبِّكَ وَإِن لَّمْ تَفْعَلْ فَمَا بَلَّغْتَ رِسَالَتَهُ وَاللَّهُ يَعْصِمُكَ مِنَ النَّاسِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الْكَافِرِينَ

"O Messenger! proclaim the (Message of Al-Qur'an ) which hath been sent to thee (Muhammad) from thy Lord. If thou (Muhammad) didst not, thou (Muhammad) wouldst not have fulfilled and proclaimed His mission. And Allah will defend thee (Muhammad) from men (who mean mischief). For Allah guideth not those who reject Faith."
(English - Yusuf Ali)

There are more than 90 verses that states that the mission of Muhammad and every messenger that Allah sent was to proclaim the Divine Message. Refer to chapter 6 verse 48, chapter 16 verse 35. Chapter 35 verses 23/24. Chapter 51 verses 50/51.

Furthermore, to make it absolutely clear Allah states in the following verses that He will answer all questions.

Surah Al-Furqan, Verse 33:
وَلَا يَأْتُونَكَ بِمَثَلٍ إِلَّا جِئْنَاكَ بِالْحَقِّ وَأَحْسَنَ تَفْسِيرًا

"And no question do they bring to thee (Muhammad) but We (Allah) reveal to thee (Muhammad) the truth and the best TAFSEER (explanation)(thereof)."
(English - Yusuf Ali)

Note the Arabic word TAFSEER in this verse. It appears only once in the entire Qur'an. The messenger is not allowed to explain. Allah will explain His Book.

Surah Ash-Shura, Verse 10:
وَمَا اخْتَلَفْتُمْ فِيهِ مِن شَيْءٍ فَحُكْمُهُ إِلَى اللَّهِ ذَٰلِكُمُ اللَّهُ رَبِّي عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ وَإِلَيْهِ أُنِيبُ

"Whatever it be wherein ye differ, the decision thereof is with Allah: such is Allah my Lord: in Him I (Muhammad) trust, and to Him I (Muhammad) turn."
(English - Yusuf Ali)

Refer also to chapter 3 verse 109. Chapter 16 verse 64. Allah answers all the questions. In chapter, 20 verse 99, chapter 4 verse 166, chapter 7 verse 52 Allah is Muhammad's teacher.

So let us find the best answers in AlQur'an for the meaning of Sunnah.

The best way to find out is to quote all the verses in AlQur'an wherever the Arabic word Sunnah appears and that will make it clear what the definition / meaning is.

There are nine verses in which the word Sunnah appears a total of fourteen times. Let me quote the nine verses.

Surah Al-Anfal, Verse 38:
قُل لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا إِن يَنتَهُوا يُغْفَرْ لَهُم مَّا قَدْ سَلَفَ وَإِن يَعُودُوا فَقَدْ مَضَتْ سُنَّتُ الْأَوَّلِينَ

"Say to the unbelievers, if (now) they desist (from unbelief), their past would be forgiven them; but if they persist, the punishment of those before them is already (a matter of warning for them)."
(English - Yusuf Ali).

In this verse the Arabic word Sunnah appears once.

Surah Al-Hijr, Verse 13:
لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِ وَقَدْ خَلَتْ سُنَّةُ الْأَوَّلِينَ

"That they should not believe in the (Message); but the ways of the ancients have passed away."
(English - Yusuf Ali)

Note in this verse the Arabic word Sunnah appears once.

Surah Al-Isra, Verse 77:
سُنَّةَ مَن قَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا قَبْلَكَ مِن رُّسُلِنَا وَلَا تَجِدُ لِسُنَّتِنَا تَحْوِيلًا

(This was Our) way with the messengers We (Allah) sent before thee (Muhammad): thou wilt find no change in Our ways."
(English - Yusuf Ali)

Note in this verse the Arabic word Sunnah appears Twice.

Surah Al-Kahf, Verse 55:
وَمَا مَنَعَ النَّاسَ أَن يُؤْمِنُوا إِذْ جَاءَهُمُ الْهُدَىٰ وَيَسْتَغْفِرُوا رَبَّهُمْ إِلَّا أَن تَأْتِيَهُمْ سُنَّةُ الْأَوَّلِينَ أَوْ يَأْتِيَهُمُ الْعَذَابُ قُبُلًا

And what is there to keep back men from believing, now that Guidance has come to them, nor from praying for forgiveness from their Lord, but that (they ask that) the ways of the ancients be repeated with them, or the Wrath be brought to them face to face?
(English - Yusuf Ali)

Note in this verse the Arabic word Sunnah appears once.

Surah Al-Ahzab, Verse 38:
مَّا كَانَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ مِنْ حَرَجٍ فِيمَا فَرَضَ اللَّهُ لَهُ سُنَّةَ اللَّهِ فِي الَّذِينَ خَلَوْا مِن قَبْلُ وَكَانَ أَمْرُ اللَّهِ قَدَرًا مَّقْدُورًا

"There can be no difficulty to the Prophet (Muhammad) in what Allah has indicated to him (Muhammad) as a duty. It was the practice (approved) of Allah amongst those of old that have passed away. And the command of Allah is a decree determined."
(English - Yusuf Ali)

Note in this verse the Arabic word Sunnah appears once.

Surah Al-Ahzab, Verse 62:
سُنَّةَ اللَّهِ فِي الَّذِينَ خَلَوْا مِن قَبْلُ وَلَن تَجِدَ لِسُنَّةِ اللَّهِ تَبْدِيلًا

(Such was) the practice (approved) of Allah among those who lived aforetime: No change wilt thou find in the practice (approved) of Allah."
(English - Yusuf Ali)

Note that the Arabic word Sunnah appears Twice in this verse.

Surah Fatir, Verse 43:

"On account of their arrogance in the land and their plotting of Evil, but the plotting of Evil will hem in only the authors thereof. Now are they but looking for the way the ancients were dealt with? But no change wilt thou find in Allah's way (of dealing): no turning off wilt thou find in Allah's way (of dealing)."
(English - Yusuf Ali)

Note that in this verse the Arabic word Sunnah appears THRICE.

Surah Al-Fath, Verse 23:
سُنَّةَ اللَّهِ الَّتِي قَدْ خَلَتْ مِن قَبْلُ وَلَن تَجِدَ لِسُنَّةِ اللَّهِ تَبْدِيلًا

"(Such has been) the practice (approved) of Allah already in the past: no change wilt thou find in the practice (approved) of Allah.
(English - Yusuf Ali)

Note that the Arabic word Sunnah appears TWICE in this verse.

Surah Ghafir, Verse 85:
فَلَمْ يَكُ يَنفَعُهُمْ إِيمَانُهُمْ لَمَّا رَأَوْا بَأْسَنَا سُنَّتَ اللَّهِ الَّتِي قَدْ خَلَتْ فِي عِبَادِهِ وَخَسِرَ هُنَالِكَ الْكَافِرُونَ

"But their professing the Faith when they (actually) saw Our Punishment was not going to profit them. (Such has been) Allah's Way of dealing with His Servants (from the most ancient times). And even thus did the Rejecters of Allah perish (utterly)!"
(English - Yusuf Ali)

Note that in this verse the Arabic word Sunnah appears once.

In the above nine verses the total number of times that the Arabic word Sunnah appears is fourteen times.

In not one of the nine verses the Arabic word Sunnah applies to Muhammad. On the contrary the Arabic word Sunnah means the ways and actions of Allah. There is no other meaning in the entire Qur'an to support the idea that it is the ways or actions of Muhammad.

If anyone still wants to contend against this meaning from the Qur'anic Arabic Text then please note the following warning.

Surah Fussilat, Verse 40:
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُلْحِدُونَ فِي آيَاتِنَا لَا يَخْفَوْنَ عَلَيْنَا أَفَمَن يُلْقَىٰ فِي النَّارِ خَيْرٌ أَم مَّن يَأْتِي آمِنًا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ اعْمَلُوا مَا شِئْتُمْ إِنَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌ

Those who pervert the Truth in Our Signs (Allah's Ayat) are not hidden from Us (Allah) . Which is better?- he that is cast into the Fire, or he that comes safe through, on the Day of Judgment? Do what ye will: verily He (Allah) seeth (clearly) all that ye do.
(English - Yusuf Ali)

Anyone who insists on asserting that the Arabic word Sunnah means the ways of Muhammad after all the evidence from the Divine Book can do so at their own peril.

Please note the warning to Muhammad by Allah SWT if he had said anything of his own accord:

Surah Al-Haaqqa, Verse 43:
تَنزِيلٌ مِّن رَّبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ

"(This is) a Message sent down from the Lord of the Worlds."
(English - Yusuf Ali)

Surah Al-Haaqqa, Verse 44:
وَلَوْ تَقَوَّلَ عَلَيْنَا بَعْضَ الْأَقَاوِيلِ

"And if the messenger (Muhammad) were to invent any sayings in Our name,
(English - Yusuf Ali)

Surah Al-Haaqqa, Verse 45:
لَأَخَذْنَا مِنْهُ بِالْيَمِينِ

"We (Allah) should certainly seize him ,(Muhammad) by his right hand,
(English - Yusuf Ali)

Surah Al-Haaqqa, Verse 46:
ثُمَّ لَقَطَعْنَا مِنْهُ الْوَتِينَ

"And We (Allah) should certainly then cut off the artery of his (Muhammad's) heart:"
(English - Yusuf Ali)
