The Two Books of God:
Every seeking mind knows that the Glorious Qur’an is the Final Word of God, not only for Muslims, but for the entire mankind.
If we study the Qur’an diligently, very soon it dawns upon us that it gently but powerfully directs our attention to the other Divine “Scripture” which is the entire universe around us.
The Qur’an rhetorically asks us: What! Will you believe in one part of the Book and ignore the other?
6:59 With Him are the keys of the Unseen. (None but He knows the subtle processes and their stages where actions culminate into their logical outcome.) He knows everything in the land and in the sea. Not even a leaf falls without His knowledge. Neither is there a grain in the dark depths of the soil, nor anything fresh or withered, that He knows not. But all is written in [KITABIM-MUBEEN] Open Book of the Universe around you.
7:54 Your Lord is God Who created the heavens and earth in six stages, and then established Himself on the Throne of His Almightiness. He draws the night over the day, each seeking the other in rapid succession. The sun, the moon and the stars are committed to serving by His command. Remember! [ALA LAHUL KHALQU WAL AMR] To Him belongs the World of Creation, and to Him belongs the World of Command. Exalted is God, the Lord of the Worlds. [10:3, 13:2. Six Stages or Eras: 10:3, 11:7, 25:59, 50:38, 57:4, See 41:10]
85:16 Carrying out His Plan according to His laws. [Fe’l = Doing = Carrying out. Ma Yureed = As He plans = As He wills = In accordance with His laws) In the World of Command He makes laws as He wills. Then He implements these laws in the World of Creation, the Universe (7:54). And then He neither changes them nor makes any exceptions. [17:77, 33:38, 33:62, 35:43, 40:85, 48:23. His Rule is the Rule of law and not of haphazard tantrums]
17:77 Such has always been Our law with all of Our Messengers We sent before you. (Nations that drove them out suffered dire consequences.) You will never find a change in Our laws. [6:34, 6:115, 10:64, 17:77, 18:27, 33:38, 33:62, 35:43, 40:85, 48:23]
33:38 There could be no difficulty to any Prophet in what God has assigned to him as a duty. That was God’s law for those who passed on before. And the commandment of God is a determined decree.
33:62 That was the way of God among those who lived before. And never will you find any change in God’s way.
35:43 Their arrogance in the land and their evil schemes! Yet an evil scheme engulfs its designers. Are they waiting for anything but the way the ancients were dealt with? Yes! No change you will ever find in the laws of God, and no deviation you will ever find in the laws of God.
48:23 This is God’s law that has been in force since older times. And you will never find any change in God’s laws. [Sunnatillah = God’s laws in practice. Kalimatillah = God’s Word = God’s laws in theory 3:139, 17:77, 33:38, 33:62, 35:43, 40:85, 48:23]
OUR PHYSICAL BODIES ARE GOVERNED BY THE CHANGELESS DIVINE LAWS.
The other aspect of our existence is our ‘Self’ commonly referred to as ‘Soul’, ‘Spirit’ or ‘Rooh’. The Qur’an calls it ‘NAFS’ = ‘Self’. The science of psychiatry has started naming the NAFS as ‘Mind’, ‘Psyche’, ‘I’ ‘I-am-ness’ ‘Me’, ‘Ego’. This is the intangible component of our existence. God has given this component (‘Self’) free will and He lets us choose our actions. So far as we know, human beings are the only creation endowed with free will, and hence, we are accountable for our deeds. Accordingly, God’s Law of Requital or Just Recompense fully applies to us.
In simple words: “As you sow so shall you reap.”
2:256 There is absolutely no compulsion or coercion in Religion. The right direction has been made distinct from error. So, whoever rejects false gods and attains conviction in God, has grasped the Unbreakable Support. God is Hearer, Knower.
THE ALL IMPORTANT QUESTION: Did the idolaters of the exalted Prophet’s times deny the existence of God as the Supreme deity? No!
10:31 Say (O Messenger), “Who is it that provides for you from the heaven and the earth, or who is it that has full power over your hearing and sight? And who is it that brings forth the living from the dead, and the dead from the living? And who is it that directs the Order of the Universe?” They will say, "God.” Say, “Will you not then be mindful of His laws?”
In other words they did acknowledge one Scripture of God, the Universe and in their physical existence running by Divine laws. But they denied the other Scripture (Divine Moral Code) - the laws given in the Qur’an about their ‘Self’ since it hurt their vested interests. Their chiefs could not, for example, accept human equity and equality in their society.
Common sense tells us that when the entire Universe is running very systematically under the laws of the One True God, why should we refuse to implement His laws in our daily lives?
It is obvious to see that ignoring God’s laws in the Universe (or the Forces of Nature) we will be left behind in science and technology. These laws are allegorically known as “angels”. Without modern sciences, we would be living in the Stone Age.
Secondly, ignoring God’s laws in our lives will leave us unguided. We will have wrong concepts of good and evil, and the whole society will become a dismal picture of anarchy and chaos. At this point, someone may point out that human conscience is always there to guide our actions, but it must be noted that human conscience is nothing but our society internalized. What may be considered virtue in one society could be looked as vice in another. Human beings do need the Supreme Being to lead us on to the right path. This He does through His chosen messengers.
“Science can tell what it is. It cannot tell what it ought to be.” – Albert Einstein
When we harness the forces of Nature (consider the angels bowing to Adam) we attain the Status of Adam.
Nations who fail to harness the forces of Nature, live a subhuman existence.
In order to live a wholesome life, we must flourish through science and technology and use the products to benefit all mankind. This is the Status of Mu'min (true believer).
The true guidance is enshrined in the Qur'an.
We find 756 verses about reflecting on the Universe, and only about 150 on Commands, Rites and Rituals. Quite a few Surahs are titled as: The Ant, The Honeybee, The Spider, The Livestock, The Smoke, The Table-spread, The Cave, The Light, The Star, The Moon, The Iron, The Pen, The Time, The Bright Star, The Elephant, The Flames, The Constellations, The Town, etc.
