No scholar called himself a 'Mu'tazali' or 'Mu'tazalite'. The Criminal N2I "Imams" of the early Abbasid dynasty times used to say the word as a slur. Anyone who taught the use of intellect in understanding the Qur'an, those 'Imams' called them Mu'tazalah.
I'tazal = Standing apart. Mu'tazalite = One who stood apart. Derivatively, one who was out of the mainstream - someone who exercised reason in understanding DEEN.
