This is an excellent, interesting lecture by Fred Donner.
I fully agree with Allama Iqbal when he says in his RECONSTRUCTION OF RELIGIOUS THOUGHT IN ISLAM, that sadly, our ancient theologians have written very sparingly about the Pre-Islamic culture and way of life in Arabia.
I have felt this void all my life and that is the point Fred Donner is delving into. Do you know that, before the Qur'an, no written book of Arabic ever existed in the Arabian peninsula which has a history of over 5,000 years?
The only significant dishonest part in Fred's speech is total omission of the concept of 'piety' in Islam.
