Everything depends upon how does one interpret the Arabic word auliya in Surah 5:51
Scholars say in the days of Crusades the translation & interpretation was "friends" because Jews and Christians were at war withe Muslims. Muslims had existential threat. Later on Islamic scholars said use "confidential friends" for Arabic word auliya.
Some Muslim scholars "auliya" means , "protectors of vital interests." Hamza Yusuf says in this time of peace and tranquility the auliya should be translated as "saviors." Here saviors of our spiritual and worldly interest for Muslims is only Prophet and Allah. Saviors of our Hereafter life too.
Scholars also say: You must take the full Quran into consideration and especially 10 ayats before and 10 ayats after 5:51 ayat.
In other place Quran allows Muslims to marry from among chaste women of Jews and Christians. Marriage is much deeper relationship, more than friends, more than confidential friends, more than protectors of vital interests. BUT AGAIN, THE AULIYA OR SAVIORS OF MUSLIMS OF LIFE IN THIS WORLD AND HEREAFTER CANNOT BE ANYONE ELSE EXCEPT ALLAH AND PROPHET.
Muhandiram here has taken the most extreme translation to word "auliya as friends."
" O you who believe! Do not take saviors (friends) from the Jews and the Christians, as they are but saviors (friends) of each other. And if any among you take them as saviors (befriends), then surely, he is one of them. Verily, Allah guides not those people who are the wrongdoers"
This specific translation is from the mind-set of when Muslims were at war with the Crusaders.
Now millions of Muslims are living in Christian societies who are not at war with Muslims.....hence there is need to think again of how to interpret the word "auliya"
