I have the strongest objection to anything that is not from the Qur'an being given the title 'Islam'.
I agree that times and circumstances demand change, bearing in mind the permanent values, but it is a step too far to equate man-made rituals with the Qur'an and call them 'islamic'.
Cultural practices are cultural practices, not Qur'anic permanent values, and when you conflate the two under sharia, you turn a flowing way of life into a dead end ritualistic one; believe me, when you do this you end up with the mess of the ajami influenced, number two islam, we have today.
It went wrong in the past, so let us move on and re-think past the damaging "rituals are integral to Islam" to Qur'an alone is integral to Islam.
