Recently, i wrote a post on Enoch. After it, i found some new info, and now i humbly share and update my previous humble opinion on Enoch:
- The description of the Quran 19:57 about Idrees and Bible Genesis 5:24 about Enoch are very close to each other, both metaphorically give a high stature to the respective persons in an aboutly same manner.
- According to Dictionary of The Holy Quran by Abdul Mannan Omar, the Hebrew word Hanukh (Latin, Enoch) and Arabic Idrees closely resemble each other in their meanings and significations.
The Prophet Idrees (from the root DRS can mean attentive study), so called from his great learning.
- Interestingly, the definition of the word Enoch on the website Dictionary.com is:
a male given name: from a Hebrew word meaning “teacher.”
The word درس (root of ادریس) in Arabic also has the meaning of teaching and lesson.
Most likely, Idress = Enoch, great grand father of Prophet Noah.
