Re: Creation and Evolution

On many occasions I felt that the debate on Creation and Evolution was conducted in good spirit and good faith. It was intended to move humanity towards a Post-Modern era based on “reason and science” with great respect for God and Religion.

Hence, my contribution in this article is towards that end:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BELIEF SYSTEM:

In order to understand the teachings of the Bible and the Qur’an on Creation and Evolution, and likewise in all the other issues of life in the Abrahamic Faith, it is important to understand that the Bible and the Qur’an do not believe in the dichotomy of the secular and the religious and all the extremists and fundamentalists teachings and practices within and between them that make them separate and exclusive.

This is because all true teachings and practices of the Bible and the Qur’an are based on “the natural laws of the different dominions of the heavens and the earth”, which persuade us to believe in God as Designer, Creator, Sustainer, Protector, etc, of the Universe without committing to any of the dogmas and doctrines of any of the religions and to follow the secular and scientific path of the creation in all affairs of our lives without being Godless.

Likewise, the Bible and the Qur’an persuade us to use the natural and universal methodology of ilm-ul-yaqin (certainty of knowledge by inference and reasoning), ayn-ul-yaqin (certainty of knowledge by seeing and observing) and haqq-ul-yaqin (absolute knowledge, like this is computer, etc) to establish the true knowledge of our universe, like plants and animals do. Hence, the Bible and the Qur’an are against the blind faith methodology of religion because it separates the secular from the religious and against the “science based” and “evidence based” methodology of the secular and scientific world, which denies the existence of God.

Thus, the knowledge of the Bible and the Qur’an on Evolution and Creation or any other issue of life cannot be seen from an entirely secular or an entirely religious perspective. Nor can it be seen as the parallel development of the secular and religious where one renders unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and unto God what is God’s. It has to be seen as the complete intersection of the secular and religious by rejecting all the extremists and fundamentalists teachings and practices of both the secular and religious without any bias or favor for the secular or the religious.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BEFORE BIG BANG:

Hence, in accordance with this belief system, the Qur’an tells us what the state our Universe was before the Big Bang took place. The following is the verse of the Qur’an to this effect:

41:11 -Then He directed Himself to the heaven while it was smoke and said to it and to the earth, "Come [into being = to be created], willingly or by compulsion." They said, "We have come willingly."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BIG BANG:

God separated the Heaven (before He divided it into the seven firmaments) and the earth (physical universe) by compressing the “smoke” (physical universe in interstellar dust and gas form) to cause the Big Bang. The following is the verse of the Qur’an to this effect:

21:30 -Are the disbelievers not aware that the heavens and earth used to be one entity and We clove them asunder? And that out of water We made every living thing? Will they not, then, acknowledge the truth? [Here is a clear allusion to the Big Bang theory. Numerous celestial bodies came into being and started swimming along in their orbits].
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EXPANDING UNIVERSE:

When the Qur’an was Revealed (about 1400 years ago), it stated that our Universe was “expanding”. The following is the verse of the Qur’an to this effect:

51:47 -And it is We Who built the Universe with power, and certainly, it is We Who are steadily expanding it. [Samaa = Sky = Heaven = Allegorically the Universe. Bi-Ayidin = With both hands = With power. The expansion of the Universe was first proposed by the Belgian cosmologist Georges Lemaitre and the Russian scientist A. Friemann. In 1929, it was observed for the first time by the American astronomer Edwin Hubble. The Qur´an had given us this knowledge 14 centuries ago! 55:5, 36:38-40]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE SIX DAYS OF CREATION:

According to the Qur’an, the six God days that God took to create the heavens and the earth does not include the time it took God to select the planet earth on which He was going to settle us after the Big Bang occurred. Likewise, it does not include the period God took to create all the living creatures He was going to create to settle on the planet earth. It only includes the six God days God took to prepare the planet earth and our solar system in the lower heaven (one of the seven firmaments of the Heaven) to sustain all living creatures He was going to settle on the planet earth. According to the Qur’an, 1 God day of this period is equal to 1000 earth years (Qur’an 22:47).

The Bible states that when God chose the planet earth to settle us on it, the planet earth was “void” of shape and form. The following is the verse of the Bible to this effect:

Genesis 1.2 –Now the earth was formless and empty (no mountains, dry land, seas, vegetation, etc), darkness was over the surface of the deep (no sunlight), and the Spirit of God (wind which was created by God) was hovering over the waters.

The following verse of the Qur’an substantiates this knowledge of the Bible as follows:

41:10 -And He is the One Who placed therein firm mountains towering above it, and bestowed enduring bliss upon it. And He measured therein its sustenance in the Four God days, alike for all who (invariably) need it. (Sustenance could not be established without creating wind, seas, dry land, sunlight, rain, etc).

Hence, after giving shape and form to the planet earth, God established the lower heaven by dividing the Heaven into seven firmaments to accommodate our solar system in it in Two God days. The following is the verse of the Qur’an to this effect:

41:12 -And He is the One Who ordained that they become seven heavens in Two God days and assigned to each heaven its function. And We decorated the sky of the world with shining lamps, and made them secure (that they do not clash in their orbits 41:9). The Bible states that it was at stage God created the seasons.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE CREATION OF THE LIVING CREATURES:

The Bible states that the creation of all living creatures took place after the Four God days God took to prepare the heavens and the planet earth to settle all living creatures on it, (Genesis 1.1-19). The Qur’an states that it happened after the Six God days God took to prepare the heavens and the planet earth to settle all living creatures on it. The Qur’an (29:20) states that if we wish to know how long it took God to create all the living creatures on the earth we must travel the earth and find out exactly how God originated the creations, I suppose “according to our knowledge of anthropology, geology, biology, etc”.

The following is the account of the Bible (Genesis 1.20-26), how God created all the living creatures on the earth:

20 And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.” 21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.”
24 And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CREATION OF MAN:

Before, Big Bang, our Universe existed in a purposeless unproductive “smoke” (interstellar dust and gas) form. Therefore, the ultimate purpose to create it was to give Man ownership of it by making Man “the vicegerent” of God on Earth.

God took a very long time to create our Universe (13.7 billion years) for two main reasons. One was because He was working with material (interstellar dust and gas), which functioned according to the Laws of Physics and Mathematics and secondly because Man was going to learn from God’s Creative Power how to “inherit and rule” the world according to the knowledge of science and not Religion.

Hence, it does not blend with our BELIEF SYSTEM and the purpose and design of Creation that Man evolved from the chimpanzee.

For example, those scholars of the Qur’an who support Evolution state that present Man evolved from the chimpanzee. Hence, he is not “vicegerent” of God but “successor” to early Man who evolved from the chimpanzee. They refer to this early Man as Jinn. They say he lives in the outskirts of our villages and town hidden from us.

But the question is, “if Man is still evolving from the chimpanzee in the process of Evolution” then it does not make sense that the Qur’an should be “the Last Book” and Prophet Muhammad (s) should be “the Last Prophet”?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

END OF TIME:

56:4 –When the earth will be shaken to its depth
56:5 –And the mountains shall be crumbled to atoms
56:6 –Becoming dust scattered abroad

75:8 –And the moon is buried in darkness
75:9 –And the sun and the moon are joined together

81:1 –When the sun (with its spacious light) is folded up
81:2 –When the star fall, losing their luster

82:1 –When the sky is cleft asunder
82:2 –When the stars are scattered
AND SO ON.

Many of these verses also speak of Resurrection, Day of Reckoning (Judgment Day), life after death, etc. Nobody knows when this will happen but if science states this will happen when God’s particle will lose its weight then who is there to argue against it?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

REALITY:

All Revealed Knowledge that intersect the secular and religious in our BELIEF SYSTEM according to “the natural laws of the different dominions of the heavens and he earth” is REALITY.

Hence, within this BELIEF SYSTEM, we believe in all scientific data and observations but not necessarily in all of its conclusions.

For example, we believe that the Universe is “expanding” and that the Big Bang did take place, but we do not agree with science on how the Big Bang happened and what the state of our Universe was before the Big Bang took place. And the fact that there is no instrument of science to argue against us on this issue does not make us anti Evolution or anti science.

Likewise, we agree with science that our creative Universe as we see it today is 13.77 billion years old and that all living creatures on planet earth demonstrate an Evolutionary pattern in creation but we do not agree with science that each species of creation evolved from the origin of the previous species. We say that God created each species (kind) of creation and there are plenty of arguments in favor of it in the Bible and the Qur’an which science cannot refute.

For example, in the above verses of the Bible, which refer to the creation of the living creature, God states that He created each kind of living creature and allowed it to “flourish” in a food chain or Creative Evolutionary manner and saw that it was “good” before He created the next kind.

In the Qur’an, there are dozens of verses that it was God Who created everything we see in the heavens and the earth in all its detail. For example, it is He Who did not allow the seeds we sow in our gardens to be created in “powdered” form but gave them different shapes, size, colors, etc, so that we would not be left in “wonderment”, (Qur’an 56:64-66). Likewise, He states that if He had left the rain water “salty” we would have found it very difficult to swallow, (Qur’an 56:69-71). And, similarly, it was He Who created the cattle for our transport and “shaped their backs” so that we could sit on them in comfort, (Qur’an 43:12-13). Most of these verses that argue against Evolution end with the question, “And which of the favors of your Lord will you deny”?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CONCLUSION:

The burden of crossing this threshold of Creation and Evolution in order to embrace the Post-Modern era rests entirely on the shoulders of the Muslim ummah (society). This is because the Christian teaching of TRINITY does impart a universal concept of God.

Hence, the sooner the Muslims cross this threshold with one voice, the sooner Islam will be made to prevail over all the other systems of life, both secular and religious.

I do not say that what I have written in this article is absolutely correct and fully substantiated. I have written my views of it from what I have read in the Qur’an in order to motivate CONSENSUS.

AK Sayed (South Africa).
