Salam to my Guru, Dr. Shabbir Ahmed,
All Brothers and Sisters,
Two days ago, Malaysians went to the polls and voted to oust incumbent PM Najib Razak whose administration has been riddled with massive corruption and blatant kleptocracy. The outcome of the polls returned 93 year old former PM of 22 years, Dr. Mahathir Mohammed to power. Some readers of this Forum may remember how Dr. Mahathir had come to the defence of the late Kassim Ahmed when the latter was attempting again to promote the ideas in his book " Re-Evaluatuion of Hadiths" in 2014. This attempt again was met with outrage by the Muslim clergy and many Muslims in this country, branding Kassim Ahmed as a blasphemer and accusing him of insulting Islam. Kassim was arrested and charged by the shariah court for a series of trials and was finally acquitted by the civil court in 2017. He was in his 80"s, frail and suffering from lung disease. He however died in ignominy and disgrace on 10th October 2017. Most masjids would not accept to perform the funeral rites nor his burial. Mahathir was disgraced and shamed for his support of Kassim.
The reason for my posting here is to express my fervent hope that now that Mahathir is back in power, would he remember to support his late friend Kassim Ahmad and his pleas to the Muslim public in Malaysia to re-evaluate the Hadith, a process which would eventually lead to a Quran oriented Islam. I hope he would, but I am not holding my breath.....
