Here is a well presented understanding of this verse by Muhammad Asad,The Message of the Quran:
Said she: "O my Sustainer! How can I have a son when no man has ever touched me?"
[The angel] answered: "Thus it is: God creates what He wills:34 when He wills a thing to be, He but says unto it, 'Be' - and it is. (3:48) And he will impart unto thy son35 revelation, and wisdom, and the Torah, and the Gospel,
(3:49) and [will make him] an apostle unto the children of Israel."36
"I HAVE COME unto you with a message from your Sustainer. I shall create for you out of clay, as it were, the shape of [your] destiny, and then breathe into it, so that it might become [your] destiny by God's leave;37 and I shall heal the blind and the leper, and bring the dead back to life by God's leave;38 and I shall let you know what you may eat and what you should store up in your houses.39 Behold, in all this there is indeed a message for you, if you are [truly] believers.
I’m writing again because I’m humbled by brother Khalil Khan’s request to do so. Thank you brother Khalil for letting diverse views flourish in the understanding of the Qur’an. It is vital to shura to do so.
Jawaid Bhai, as far as 3:47 is concerned, I am not prepared to discuss anymore. I think I have exhausted my discussion on it as an ordinary person who reads the Qur’an in the English language according to the methodology ilm-ul-yaqin, ayn-ul-yaqin and haqq-ul-yaqin. I also think brother Dawood has also done enough to explain this verse as a very good scholar of the Arabic language. I regard him as a far more superior scholar of the Qur’an than myself and guide for me to follow.
As far 3:49 is concerned I am glad that you agree that Jesus did cure the lepers and gave sight to the blind and also raised the dead to life.
But unfortunately, as far as the making of my DESTINY out of clay and breathing into it does not make sense to my simple brain. Only God and I are responsible for my destiny.
To me the making of a bird out of clay and breathing into it to give life to it is very important information on how God created bird and animal life, in the same way that God created Adam and gave him life. This sentence in this verse clarifies God mode of creation of animal and human life.
Besides, this sentence in this verse does not only tell me that the Evolution Theory in the creation of animal and human life is false but it also tells me that those who have translated the Qur’an to mean bird in this verse and not destiny are correct. Maybe Dawood can help us here to clarify whether the bird translation or the destiny translation is correct.
My brother, let me tell you something. There are hundreds of translations of the Qur’an out there and you don’t expect us to read every one of them. It’s not practical.
But it does need a good brain to understand whichever translations we read. I am sorry but I have to say that you don’t have one (in retaliation to all the insults you have directed on me).
