MILLAT: A human perspective of Deen

There is something in the following verses of the Qur’an that tell me that there is some very important Message of the “millat of Ibrahim” in the Qur’an that we Muslims should take careful note of:

In many verses of the Qur’an Allah insists that we “follow the millat of Ibrahim”, 2:135, 3:95, 4:125, 6:161, 16:123).

3:68 “people who have the strongest claim to Abraham are those who followed him (I think his millat) and this Prophet”.

In 2:130 Allah states that “who would deliberately denounce the millat of Abraham except someone who reveals himself to be a fool?”

26:69 “Recite to them the story of Abraham”.

26:84 Abraham makes a dua, “Lord, grant me honourable mention on the tongue of Truth among the latest (generations).

--------------------------------------
Hence, whatever I am going to say in this Post will be my personal opinion and I would like all people in this forum to look at it and make their input with an open mind so that we can all come to a common understanding of it, for a better knowledge of the Qur’an that will unify us for intense and purpose.

--------------------------------------
In order to explain or understand the “millat of Ibrahim” I think we should first of all explain or understand what is the DEEN OF ALLAH? Here I have just taken two verses of the Qur’an to explain what I think is the DEEN OF ALLAH. Maybe there is more to it than I think. If there are some people on this who think there is more to it than I have knowledge please make your contribution. It be greatly appreciated. The verses that I referred to are as follows:

3:83 What! Do they seek other than the Prescribed way (Deen) of God, when to Him submit all beings in the heavens and earth, either by free will or by their innate Nature and programming, and to Him they will be returned - and to Him they go back as their Originating Source. [All things in the Universe surrender to God, either by free will as the believers do, or through their innate Nature such as animals, trees, stars, seasons etc. Even the deniers of the truth live by Divine Laws in their physical lives]

22:18 Do you not see that to God submits whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth? And so do the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the moving creatures and many of the human beings (submit to Him). But a great number (of human beings) are such that incur retribution. Whomever God (His Laws) disgraces, for him there is none to raise him to honor. God carries out all according to His Laws. ['Daabbah' = All kinds of living beings that crawl on their belly, walk on two or four feet, or fly]

Hence, DEEN OF ALLAH is centred on the knowledge that God created everything in this universe according to the knowledge of science and that everything in it even those that have freewill should function accordingly and that if they did not they would incur retribution.

--------------------------------------
In 3:84 Allah states that He revealed this DEEN to Abraham and all his descendants. Note here that He does not mention Noah implying that this DEEN specifically implies to Abraham and all those that descended from him.

In 3:85 Allah states that this is the DEEN OF ISLAM and whoever will not follow it Allah will not accept any other system of life from him/her.

---------------------------------------
Hence, when Abraham rejected all the religions of his time, God “showed him the power and the laws of the different dominions of the heavens and earth so that he might (with understanding) have certitude”, (6:75).

Thus, the “millat of Ibrahim” is no different than the DEEN OF ALLAH or the DEEN OF ISLAM except for the fact that Abraham being a free willed and rational person had to take certain precautions in that he would not in materialism and Godlessness in it.

---------------------------------------
Thus, there is a human perspective in the millat of Ibrahim which we need to comprehend to understand the DEEN OF ALLAH and the DEEN OF ISLAM.

Hence, before we tackle all its institution of rituals, let’s try to explain and understand that the “millat of Ibrahim” is not a new religion which I am trying to promote but I am doing so because there is no other way to explain that ISLAM is a Post-Modern way of life which is most relevant to our time and we need to understand it to replace all other systems of life that are causing chaos to our world.

Best Regards,
AK Sayed (South Africa).

P/S: Sorry my presentation is a bit haphazard. I had to write it in a hurry because wife needs a lot of attention and I need to do a lot of housework today and tomorrow because I am getting visitors over week end.
