Thanks for your comments.
The speaker equates Millat as creed which in 16:123 is specified as Monotheism.
Sure there were some traditions which had been handed down over generations, and people were following them but as you suggest they had become "distorted".
Anyway, a few observations re Salat the ritual prayer for you Sir, to comment:
1. Is it possible that the blessed Messenger was asked to call for Salat meetings where he recited the Quran to those assembled. Why regular meetings then? Because they did not have copies of printed copies of the Quran spread around all over the city. When they came to those meetings, they were asked to make sure they are presentable and clean. The Prophet was asked not to be forceful [loud] or soft in his preaching of Allah's word but adopt a middle course. Those whose minds were messed up were asked to stay away as Allah did not want them to take part in discussions over what they did not comprehend. About the Salat meetings of the Mushriks, the Quran says there is a lot of whistling and clapping but no substance.
2. Issues about the way we offer Salat [the prayer]:
We need to remember that Allah says not to go near Salat if our minds are "under influence" (messed up) as we must understand what we utter. Problem is majority of Muslims go through Salat in Arabic and do not understand what they are saying (except for those who have memorized a few short suras with meaning). Praying behind Imams, the Imam recites and those not knowing Arabic have no clue.
Second: We are asked in the Quran to offer Salat neither too loudly nor in a low tone but adopt a middle tone. Well, when we offer salat at home, we do it quietly and in the masjid, a few Salat are offered quietly as well.
Another point: While in the sitting position we greet the blessed Messenger as he were present sitting in front of us. How does that make sense?
As for call to prayer, washing before prayers, there are differences between Shias and Sunnis. Whose prayer is close to the blessed Prophet ?
What was the Salat Shuaib was talking about which prevented people from being dishonest in their business dealings? What is the Salat of the birds?
- food for [further thought] !
3. Is it not true that the details about performing Salat the prayer are missing in the Quran?
