AN OPEN LETTER TO ALLAMA MOHAMMED IQBAL
VISIONARY POET: November 9, 1877 - April 21, 1938,

You wanted every man to rise above the quagmire
So Allah bestows upon him a destiny he may desire,
But here we are, each one of us stooping low enough
To feed on our neighbor without shame, without
Even a semblance of self esteem;
Short-changing our kin;
Bowing before
Material gods; worshipping
The moment as if it were our last!
And how can it be any other way when we
Look around and see what our Generals are up to?
Or what our politicians are after, or our academicians,
Who are always away on sabbaticals? And you needn't ask
About our bureaucrats, or our judges, always eager to strut about
On center stage! And so, you will conclude the days of the Quaid
Are over! The days of sacrifice for the nation are over! The days
For integration are way far behind us – and no matter what
You say, it is of no consequence even if you are on a
Direct dial from Heaven, and even if you are
Willing to share your wisdom with us all
Over again! And you will wonder
If we are the children of
The same Ummah
For whom a world
Was torn apart so
There would be
Light without
The shadow of
Our enemy
Looming
Over
Us?
Such thoughts for the plight of our people
Were appropriate then - but should you
Insist on holding your head in that
Same pensive manner now
As if you are busy
Extracting
Metaphors
So we comprehend your message,
Then you are in for a rude awakening
For we are nowhere as committed
To your every word as our elders -
Which Brings us back to
Your efforts
In establishing contact all over again,
Even in the absence of true believers!
And while we appreciate your concern,
I don’t think you will feel at home here,
And you might even end up
Behind bars
Or made to disappear!
Think about it and reconsider!
On behalf of the offspring of Pakistan,
Yours sincerely, Raja Changez Sultan!
