Soum means abstinence, to stop ding whatever we are doing etc and there is not a single verse in the Quran that can justify that it means abstinence from food and water. The QURAN CONTAINS A STORY ABOUT THE SOUM OF MARY. She was not going hungry or thirsty. Her soum did not require her to go hungry and thirsty. Remember the Quran says it gives the best examples so we can understand the Quran better.
Soum encompasses refrain from doing anything that will harm the humanity. And if you see a situation that is harmful to the society then we should do whatever we can to stop it, and if we are doing it then we should also stop doing it. If we are not capable of stopping it, then we should get training to make ourselves capable.
Furthermore, the Quran says that soum will make us righteous. (2:183 - 184) and if this all it takes to make us righteous, well then we need do nothing else. Also, how come this soum becomes a punishment for those who do wrong? See verses 2:196, 4:92, 5:89, 5:95 and 58:4
A punishment for killing a person is fasting for 60 days. What a relief?
A punishment for breaking an oath is fasting for 3 days. Whew?
Fasting as a punishment which cannot be enforced.
Soum is not refrain from food and water.
