The month of Ramadan signifies profound introspection. To become fully ourselves, exercising our critical reasoning, challenging the idolatries and toxic narratives promulgated in the name of Islam, surrendering our hearts to the call of God. We turn our lives into "living Islam" by actualiaing Allah's intentions to become vicegerents of Divine unity, justice and peace on planet earth, honoring and respecting the intrinsic dignity of each and every human being.
Our calling as humans is to be caretakers of the earthly mosque, respecting other people and all creatures as signs of Allah. We are entrusted by the Divine Voice to take care of one another despite our natural distinctions.
Caretaking is a communal as well as a private mode of activity, economic as well as personal. Our sacred duty is to developĀ communities which are creative, compassionate, participatory, respectful of diversity, and ecologically wise, with no life left behind. These communities need to be centered in the unity at the heart of the universe, in God in whom we dwell and have our very being.
May we work zealously - in our private and collective capacity - to wholly transform our national and racial viewpoint and create in its place, in the words of Muhammad Iqbal, a "purely human consciousness".
Ramadan Mubarak to all.
