Perhaps you know that SATEE (widows burning alive in their husbands' pyre - CHITA) was banned by the British rulers in India.

Lord William Bentinck, the governor general of India from 1828-1835, outlawed the cruel practice - but even today more than 2,000 widows get burned alive at the pyre every year.

[Lieutenant-General Lord William Henry Cavendish-Bentinck GCB GCH PC, known as Lord William Bentinck, was a British soldier and statesman. He served as Governor-General of India from 1828 to 1835.
Born: September 14, 1774, Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom
Died: June 17, 1839, Paris, France] Wikipedia

Bentinck tried to ban NEOG as well but he failed miserably. Do you know what NEOG is, I don't?
