Brother Joseph has repeated what he has written on his website and when I read it the first time I looked in the verse for the word ONLY and could not find it:-
5:1 O You who have chosen to be graced with belief! Fulfill your pledges and obligations. Permitted for you is the flesh of every beast that eats plants, except what is specifically forbidden in the Book. Allah has ordained that all hunting is prohibited during Hajj. Verily, Allah Ordains as He deems fit.
From 6:141-144 we do have a list of grazing livestock and some of these had been denied for consumption for no good reason, which the Quran came to correct. This is in agreement with my understanding of 5:1 which gives permission to eat them, overturning any man made bans, e.g Hindus. My understanding of Arabic may be weak but I do not think we can put the word “only” in 5:1 when it does not exist. The verse is just a statement of fact that all grazing livestock are permitted to be eaten, but permission to do a thing does not preclude doing something else, particularly when we have clear verses that say we must not do so:-
10:58 Say, “In this bounty of God and in His grace – in this, then, let them rejoice. It is better than all the treasures that they may amass.”
10:59 Say, “Have you considered how God sends down to you all kinds of provisions for your minds and bodies? Then YOU render some of them unlawful and some lawful?” Say, “Has God permitted you to do this? Or do you invent lies and attribute them to God?” [The clergy go after manmade dogmas thus tampering with the revealed Word of God and declare unlawful His bounties of sustenance, food, clothes, ornament of life and things of aesthetic beauty such as art. 7:32. See 34:13 how a Prophet of God, Solomon decorates his kingdom with beautiful works of art]
