I'm no defender of Muslims (or *anyone*) who abuse the benefits system, but that article is from a right-wing newspaper with an inherent bias towards Muslims. The original title (as printed in Sept 2011) is:
The truth about polygamy: A special investigation into how Muslim men *can* exploit the benefits system
Note the word ambiguous word 'can' (as highlighted by me). The important passages are:
[quote] "These marriages are not recognised officially, so they do not appear in government statistics or have any status under the law. They also do not count when assessing welfare payments."
At least they admit that!
[quote] "Another technique is for a couple to marry legally under British law but then divorce, leaving them then to have a Nikah ceremony and continue living together. The woman will then be entitled to welfare payments as a single mother and the man can then bring another woman from abroad and legally marry her in Britain."
Leave aside the moral issue of polygamy. It has no real relevance to this cheap attempt to depict Muslims as benefits scroungers. How their situation any different from any other community's - legally speaking? What I mean is, a single mother can claim benefit whether or not she is or has been in either a monogamous or polygamous marriage, or whether she has never been married. Her marriage status has no bearing on her ability to take from the system as a mother. The paper is deliberately fogging two issues to breed further hatred of a community that is already despised *merely for existing*. Note, no other major paper printed a similar story because it was so obviously a prejudice piece. Please, don't take the Daily Mail seriously!
