There are no explicit instructions in the Quran about suicide. Some other subjects like the wayfarer, rape etc have also not been directly explained. The Quran gives a set of permanent values and principles and it is the duty of the Islamic state to formulate rules, regulations and laws dealing with all aspects of human life within the framework or parameters of these values. From childhood we have been told that suicide is 'Haram'Maut'. Taking your own life has always been considered sinful.
We all know that the Quran gives utmost importance to human life and major part of the Divine Revelation deals with it.Man is supposed to face the different situations in life with courage and determination. In the ups and downs of life there are times when one feels dejected, depressed and loses hope. This ultimately leads to suicide. In Pakistan a great number of people have been committing suicide for economic reasons. Even Euthanasia seems a humanistic approach. We all despise pain and the worst fears of death are related to pain that it may cause. If there is a specific and fixed time for death, then suicide has to be accepted as something not against Islamic values. Many verses of the Quran may taken to discourage suicide, but at times I feel that suicide is the only way out.
The subject, like Riba, needs further discussion and it is sad that there is not even one Islamic state in the world to take up this issue and resolve it with proper consultation
