Saleena Karim, a young expert on Quaid-e-Azam and Pakistan Movement, author of SECULAR JINNAH, has asked me to provide a reference to the above 'anecdote' about Quad-e-Azam MAJ.
- Dr Shabbir
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ANECDOTE: Quaid-e-Azam was invited to a Friday congregation in London - 1945. He decisively said, "Take me to a Mosque that has no flag and it is not devoted to any sect. There was only one such Masjid in London at the time (today there may be none.) He prayed there with delight. He was asked for the reason behind his precondition. The Great Quaid said, "Masjids are for Allah and not for other entities." Wasn't the "Secular", "Kafir" MAJ referring to verse 72:18?

72:18 And the Masjids, one and all, belong to God alone. So, do not call upon anyone along with God.

W'A Dear Beti,

Prof Khalid bin Sayeed (1927-2011) born at Hyderabad Deccan, was Professor Emeritus of Political Science and Adjunct Prof of History at Queen's University, Kingston, Canada until 2010. A PhD from Harvard, he authored numerous books. He was a very active figure in the Pakistan Movement and always tried to remain close to MAJ for any service.

Prof Sayeed who had some family ties in South Florida, frequently visited us and became a close friend of mine. He used to tell us a lot about the great Quaid and the Pakistan Movement. He personally told me this inspiring anecdote. I have not seen a person who would accurately quote as much poetry of Allama Iqbal as he did. My word, his English was better than that of an Englishman!

One of his books THE FORMATIVE PHASE OF PAKISTAN, 1857-1948, is decorated with the above anecdote of Quaid-e-Azam. Prof Khalid bin Sayeed accompanied the Quaid to London on that short visit. He was also present when Quaid-e-Azam addressed Hyderabad students in 1941 and most beautifully defined an Islamic State.

I recall having read the same anecdote in the Urdu biography of Quaid-e-Azam by G.Allana (Ghulam Ali Allana 1906-84), QUAID-E-AZAM JINNAH.
