Dear Dr. Shabbir, AOA,
Islam is a universal religion (‘din’) and is meant for entire mankind. Similarly, ’Ummah’ comprise all believers (Muslims) may be belonging to any tribe, clan or society. I am sure that during the Holy Prophet’s reign, his immediate followers called ‘ sahaba-e-karam’, not only properly understood the Quran, but also strictly followed its teachings. That is why Allah has eulogized these ‘sahaba’s conduct and role in exalted terms in the Quran. There is, therefore, no question of the Prophet making any complaint against any of them. The rot started after the ‘khulafa-e- Rashidah’ when monarchy took over and kingdoms of ‘Ummayeds’ and’Abbasides’ were established. It is then that the entire process got derailed. It was at that time that enemies of Islam, realizing that the Muslims owed their strength to the Quran’s lofty teachings, conspired to create a wedge between the Muslims and the Quran by fabricating false traditions and concocting stories about ‘ shan-e nazool’. They succeeded in their nefarious designs in that the ‘Ummah’fell in their trap and started following said fabricated traditions. This besides undermining the true meanings of Quranic ‘ayats’, also restricted the range and scope of Quranic injunctions. This unfortunate practice has been continuing to this day. Hence, the Holy Prophet’s complaint against the ‘Ummah---and NOT particularly against any specific clan or group.
