The term "Sabbath" derives from the Hebrew Shabbat (שבת), "to cease".
It is generally understood that the reference is to the Jews who were asked to abide by certain rules and regulations in order to discipline themselves, one such rule was not to work on one day, the Sabbath or Saturday.
My use of this verse was to show that only by fully implementing the Quran can we hope to achieve some sort of stable and sustainable social system; it worked at times in the past, before people lost sight of what they were supposed to be doing, as the above post clearly showed.
We can learn from the past glory of Islam, but each generation must adapt to the situation that presents itself in their time; we must improve our futures but many Mullahs live in the past with their ancestral traditions which brings no future prosperity.
“People of the scripture” refers to us Muslims now as well, and we seem to be doing all the wrongs that the others have done!
