5:5 This Day, all good food of your choice is made Lawful for you. The food of the People of the Scripture is Lawful for you. And your food is Lawful for them. You are permitted to marry chaste women of the People of the Scripture, (provided they do not indulge in Shirk … not associate anyone with God 2:221). You are permitted to marry the virtuous, chaste women among the believers and the virtuous, chaste women of those who were given the Scripture before. You must give your brides a generous marital gift and live with them in honor, not in fornication as secret lovers. (It must be an honest wedlock 4:24.) Anyone who rejects belief, all his work will go vain and He will be among the losers in the Hereafter.

The marriage issue can be better understood from the food requirements. A medical practitioner I know asked if we can eat food prepared by Christians whilst he was on holiday, since the Quran says their food is allowed for us. He was trying to say that any food prepared by Christians is allowed, based on 5:5, so why should he hunt around for a ‘Muslim’ restaurant or just stick to vegetarian food? Food was not the only problem with Copacabana beach!

I asked him if he would be eating pork, since ‘Christians’ say ‘what goes in is of no consequence, it is what comes out [your character] that is important’, hence they eat pork. Also, they can disregard blood draining and some use dead animals they find [‘road kill’ animals are used in one restaurant in London!]. The operative words from 5:5 are ‘all good things’, NOT EVERYTHING. We also know that in other verses of the Quran, the food sources that are haram have been clearly elucidated for us, so it was easy persuading him to put his emaan ahead of his stomach.

Marrying women from the ‘people of the Book’

With regards marrying women from the ‘people of the Book’, who are they? ‘People of the Book’ are those Jews and Christians that are following the right guidance of Allah; they do not assign divinity to Jesus or their Rabbis, and practice the righteous acts prescribed in the Bible, whatever is left of the Divine message within it.

2:257 God becomes the Close Guide of those who, after due reflection, have chosen to believe in His Word (12:108). He brings them out of darkness into Light (through the Qur’an). Those who deny the Divine System of Life have human "authorities" as patrons to lead them from Light to darkness. Such people have chosen Fire to be their eternal companion.

If some are going to hell, how can we marry them? What will they do to our beliefs if they are on the wrong path; believe me, women can be very persuasive!

Like ‘good’ food only, there is the requirement to marry ‘chaste’ women; not all women from the people of the Book are allowed. Many young, hot blooded, ‘Muslims’ are finding western women more approachable than Muslim sisters [although many are just as bad], so they ‘fall in love’ and marry them. The girl is ‘converted’ to Islam, which really means she says the shahada so that her in-laws can be appeased! Some Christian missionaries deliberately send single females to Muslim lands to marry Muslim men, quoting 5:5, and then wheel and deal their beliefs into his; believe me, women can be very persuasive!

Also, look at the Quran about some of these people of the Book:-
62:5 [The Book of God is to be read and understood, and not placed in high niches] The example of those who were entrusted with Torah, and did not apply it in their daily lives, is that of the donkey that carries a load of books. Miserable indeed is the example of people who deny God’s messages with their actions. God does not guide people who displace the Revelation from its rightful status.
[Kizb = Belie = Give lie = Deny in practice. Kufr = Reject openly = Darkness = Denial = Ingratitude = Concealing. Zulm = Dislodge from the rightful place = Relegate the Truth = Give preference to conjecture = Oppression = Wrongdoing = Violation of human rights]

So who does this leave for us to marry? Tell any brother that wants a marriage out of the fold of Islam (even though this is not something to be fully proud of when N2I is rampant), to stay away OR convert her through intellect and reason first, then marry in MUTUAL GOOD FAITH.

I am speaking from personal experience.
