Very intriguing debate; I have gone from believing in multiple marriages at times of emergencies only, to marry only one, and then, maybe, perhaps, somewhere in the middle!
One thing I would like to add is that verse 24:32 about singles does not end there, it continues with 24:33:-
24:32 And marry the singles among you, (whether they are widowed, divorced or bachelors). They may marry the righteous among your male and female servants. If they are poor, God will enrich them with His Bounty. For, God is of Infinite means, and He knows all things.
24:33 And those who cannot find a match must keep chaste until God grants them sufficiency out of His Bounty.
“If you cannot marry then keep yourself chaste”, which means marriage is not essential but righteous behaviour is.
What this shows is that even in war conditions it is not a requirement to ‘marry off’ surplus women.
Also, all the interpretations of war brides, multiple wives for Messengers of Allah, are based on the distorted Bible, or highly dubious hadith, so we can all be guilty of approaching the Quran with minds that are not ‘pure’!
