I think trying to know how he was once he is dead should not matter as it cannot be confirmed. Please don't think I am a fan of Maududi, as he was the first person who's tafaseers I read and from where I realised something was terribly wrong somewhere! I only say this because I think this kind of thinking stops us from listening to anyone who might even be saying something right. We hear bad things about someone from someone and we judge by that which is not correct in my point of veiw.
We should concentrate on what and why was written; Something that is verifiable, keeping Quran as judge.
