Dear Brother Salman,
Honestly, the Ayat you have given is the only one I find with any weight to support a prohibition of taking more than one wife. I hope somebody can explain it.
Another reason why I go on insisting taking more than one wife may not be prohibited is the proof that Prophets of Allah have had more than one wife. If we leave Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) out, for that would be a long debate in itself, we can at least say The Exalted Prophet Ibrahim had two wives. Also, I quote from QXP Author's note to Surah Al-Yusuf: "Jacob had twelve sons from four wives. Joseph the second youngest and Benjamin (Binyamin), the youngest had the same mother (Rachel)."
Now it is perfectly understandable that Allah may give His chosen ones special priviledges, but it is not palatable He would allow them to do something Haram (if taking more than one wife is presumed to be Haraam.) Prophets of Allah have always been role-models for people.
