Victory for Freedom of Speech: Anti-Islamic ad will run on Florida Buses
Florida, USA: Miami-Dade County Transit has changed its decision from banning an ad that was encouraging people to leave Islam.
An organization named Stop the Islamization of America (SIOA), sponsored the ad and it was running on city buses. However, Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer of The Freedom Defense Initiative actively support the group.
Apostasy is a serious offense in Islam and it is punishable by death. The campaign aimed to help Muslims who face difficulties in leaving Islam.
The ad says, “Fatwa on your head? Is your community or family threatening you? Leaving Islam? Got questions? Get answers!” It also has a Web site address where the help can be obtained.
Soon, Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) protested the ad and the transit authority decided to remove the ad.
However, lawyer Richard Thompson challenged the decision of the transit authority on the ground of constitutional right to free speech and contractual obligations. The Transit Authority realized their error and promised to fulfill the contract. They even added 20 more ads in addition to current ads as compensation.
Mr. Spencer was very pleased with the decision and said, “CAIR is an organization that practices a thuggish kind of intimidation. It’s very rare that CAIR is defeated — and it is a great thing that CAIR has been handed this defeat.”
