The idea that Riba should only be an issue when dealing with charity and the poor and nothing to do with business is dangerous. The Western world has recently shown how interest based economies are able to collapse at the slightest sneeze of some banker or stock market trader!
Interest is ‘money for nothing’, and it involves very little risk from the lender (they nearly always win, win) and huge risk to the borrower who has to pay back capital that was not given to them. Business involves buying a selling goods with profits created, ‘money from something’ and this is the system called for from the Quran, not a re-working of the understanding to suit western business interests. The wealth accumulated by proper Islamic governments at certain times in the last 1400 years, proves that interest free economies can work for the benefit of mankind; this is the solution for humanity.
