Dear brother,

In prose, you can find it in KULLIYAAT-E-MAKATEEB-E-IQBAL by Syed Muzaffar Husain Burney, Urdu Academy, Delhi, 2nd reprint 1991, volume 2, pg 932.

[Thank you for the query although many of such bits simply linger on somewhere in some nooks of our memory! But, with some effort, I was able to find it. Oh, his letters span over four volumes, a total of more than 4,600 pages.]

Poetry in BAANG-E-DARA:
NAZAR AA JAATA HAI MASJID MEIN BHI TU EID KE DIN
ASA-E-WA'Z SE HOTI HAI TABEEAT BHI GADAAZ
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To brother AmirAbbass above:

Dear brother,

This poem has an interesting background. It was 1912 when a Turkish delegation was visiting Lahore (in the then India, a British colony). The head of the Turkish delegation asked Allama Iqbal why the Indian Muslims fell prostrate for so long. Allama answered:

HAZAR KAAM HEIN MARDAAN-E-HUR KO DUNIYA MEIN
WARAAYE SAJDAH GHAREEBON KO AUR KYA HAI KAAM
There are a thousand missions in the world for free men
But for the poor slaves what else is their but prostrations (before their masters)?

The great Allama writes in his Urdu prose and poetry that he "offers" Namaz only at Eid for social reasons. He disliked physical prostration. He strongly believed in spiritual SAJDAH (a hearty submission) to the commands of Allah.

NAZAR AA JAATA HAI MASJID MEIN BHI TU EID KE DIN
ASA-E-WA'Z SE HOTI HAI TABEEAT BHI GADAAZ

YEH AIK SAJDAH JISAY TU GARAAN SAMAJHTA HAI
HAZAAR SAJDAY SE DAITA HAI AADMI KO NIJAAT
