Recently I was driving in a neighborhood and saw few small children selling lemonade on the road making collections for Haitian victims. Looking at their innocence I thought Allah has already filled our heart with kindness. That means compassion existed within us prior to the Ten Commandments.

So can Ten Commandments provide a basis for morality? The answer therefore is ‘no’. Because Ten Commandments itself depend upon a prior moral judgment. The commandments are not a source of morality but a reminder of morality.

As you said; they do research, they can consider the long term results of such behaviors in human society. That means morality can also be sourced from trial and error experiments. For example, things forbidden for bad consequences.
