Isaac Asimov wrote a short story where he described how man developed his physical surroundings; he conquered the seas, then ventured into space and eventually settled new planets. When he became bored with his body he transferred his mind into machines and then freed himself from even these, by becoming thinking packets of energy. These then came together into one incredibly complex entity. When the universe finally came to an end, as the last sun died out, this entity was left alone to reflect on its journey through space and time and then decided to act, and said “Let there be light”, and there was light.
Slightly blasphemous, but I enjoyed the twist at the end.
