Salam brother Arif,
Thank you for the post. This is the initial men's favourite but conditional verse on marraige that is commmonly used as an excuse to have 2nd, 3rd, 4rth wife. Even ignoring the commands on not to mary for lust. Very often and as I always say for their own convenience they forget the "final" order on marraige in Surah An-Noor.
A gentle reminder, this is the only chapter where Allah SWT is reminding that the "orders" in the surah are binding on us...
"This is a Surah that We have sent down with a 'Decree of Law'. Clear Commandments have been given in it for you to bear in mind". 24:1
and that verse is,
"And marry the SINGLES among you, (whether they are widowed, divorced or bachelors) And those who are still being kept as slaves, male or female, such of them 'as are fit' to marry. If they are poor, God will enrich them with His Bounty. For, God is of Infinite means, and He knows all things. "
Now some people urgue that the verse you quoted still holds true and cannot be conditional (i.e., according to the circumstances back then) as Quran is for all times. That arguement is not correct and this has happened many times in Quran. Think about the verses on "khamar". Is it alright to quote the first verse on khamar and declare any kind of antoxicant allowed??
