This in a way also applies to civilization. Since Muslim Ummah has been static for so long, some external forces had to act upon it to change its course. One may ask if Ummah was static why the hell the other forces had to act upon it. Why not leave it alone? The answer is simple. Human beings are also like chimpanzee. They tolerate nothing and cannot leave anything alone. Its all up to you to save yourself.
Contrary to your belief, I say there are no foreign conspiracies that played the downfall of Muslim Ummah. It was only the divine work that impacted Muslims through the forces of physics.
Zaid Hamid once talked about regaining Muslims past glory and strength. This typical Muslim mind-set is amusing. Strength once lost it is lost for ever. You cannot regain your strength, you only create your new strength. Some of his talk also seems strange, like the Muslims glorious past. You cannot plan your future by the past, as past can be your history but it is never your destiny.
Zaid Hamid is certainly an honest person. But where are his views of the other sides of Muslims inadequacies. His rhetoric is fine but his vision needs some concrete ideas and a road map to uplift Muslim civilization. Mere feelings are never enough.
So if you need to awaken Muslims against foreign conspiracies, you also need to awaken Muslims against their own conspiracies about themselves.
